TMJ Pain, Clenching & Grinding

What is TMJ pain?

Headaches, sore teeth and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain can often be a result of prolonged clenching and grinding of your teeth. Treatment such as splint therapy and muscle relaxants can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with clenching and grinding

Relieve TMJ pain with muscle relaxants at Hermitage Dental

What are muscle relaxants and how do they work?

Muscle relaxants are a non surgical option that aim to relax the enlarged masseter muscle in the jaw that is responsible for clenching and grinding. This results in reduction of pain and headaches and the effects typically last 3 to 4 months.

The procedure involves micro injections into the jaw muscle of Botulinum toxin. It is essentially a painless procedure with no need for local anaesthetic. The overall procedure only takes a few minutes.

How does splint therapy work?

Splint therapy involves wearing a custom night guard. The dentist takes either a digital or conventional impressions of your teeth and the appliance is produced at one of our dental laboratories. A night guard aims to protect your teeth from the effects of bruxism as well as alleviate TMJ pain and headaches.
